New! Dye Sublimation All-Over Print Tees

We're introducing a new style of tee at Shelf Life Clothing, all-over print tees created by dye sublimation, complimenting our traditional silkscreen printed tees.

Dye sublimation is a printing technique that allows all-over-printing of full color images with superior softness. Artwork is first printed onto large sheets of high release paper substrate, and the images are then transferred to the garments using heat and pressure. The heat converts the solid dye particles into a gas, and the pressure forces them to bond to the polyester content of the garments. The dye is absorbed by the garment during the sublimation process, which differs from the screen print process, where the ink sits on top of the garment.

Dye sublimation tees produce a high-quality printed image, with a distressed look around creases and seams. Sublimation printing will not crack, peel or flake off. Sublimated shirts leave a permanent, vivid image with a soft-to-the-hand feel. We use Vapor tees, which are made with high-quality 100% spun polyester and deliver the look and feel of organic cotton with the wickability of poly-performance fibers; providing a great fit with a soft feel.

Printing with Vapor tees also allows us to stock sizes up to 5XL. We were skeptical about using the spun polyester tees until we actually held a printed tee in our hands and judged the feel - it's a great, soft fabric that is not unlike a heavy cotton athletic tee. We couldn't be happier with the look and quality of the prints.

Here's a video that shows the dye sublimation print process, which also features some pretty intense death metal. Be warned!

We've picked the greatest stunts in movie history and put them all together in one death-defying, jaw-dropping video for you to enjoy! If you have a favorite that we didn't show, leave a comment! Chances are we wanted to include it but had to narrow our list down.

This compilation doesn't showcase complicated fight choreography or movements, but celebrates big, single-event, one-take gags, car stunts and falls. For instance, Tony Jaa doing a spinning leg kick isn't on the list, but Tony Jaa doing a spinning leg kick with his legs set on fire is definitely on the list!

We avoided any CGI and steered clear of scenes with a lot of edits, camera trickery, excessive wirework and any effects-enhanced stunts. We gave extra points to stunts that further a story or have some emotional resonance in the movie – like Toshiro Mifune's horse stunt in Hidden Fortress. It might not be as spectacularly death defying as the other stunts, but it is an incredible moment in the film and you can see that it is actually Mifune performing the stunt himself.

P.S. It's amazing how clever the Roger Moore era Bond films were in devising show-stopping stunts, and of course Jackie Chan's creative stunts are legend.

The shirt is inspired by the supposed signs in foreign-run concession areas in China, particularly at the entrance to the Huangpu Park in Shanghai – and also depicted in a scene in the film FISTS OF FURY. Although research has shown that this sign never really existed as it is depicted in the film, the scene itself was a triumphant moment for an underdog hero that worked wonderfully well as a pop-culture attack on prejudice, and as a boost in racial pride for Chinese audiences in 1972.

10 Observations About Magic Marketplace Summer 2009

Not a big restroom.

I just spent the week in Vegas, making the rounds and checking out all the latest trends at Magic Marketplace, the largest apparel and accessory trade show in the U.S., a huge event where buyers and retailers from around the world converge to find the latest and coolest fashions. It's actually three separate trade shows, Magic, Pool and Project - each with their own unique vibe.

I've been to a few Magic events, although I skipped last year's. I attended this year's show in hopes of finding some new items for ShelfLifeClothing.com and I found some very cool designers to work with.

Here are ten observations from the show:

1 • POOL has grown since the last time I attended, and was definitely the highlight. The last time I was there, it was held in a massive tent outside of the Magic events inside the Hilton Convention Center, and although there were some cool independent clothing lines, the mood was quiet and there were also some booths with stuff that struck me as more appropriate for an arts & crafts show. This year, it definitely had the most vibrant and creative stuff, and there was a lot of hustle and bustle.

2 • I heard that the last Magic Streetwear in February was a "ghost town," and my impression of last week's Magic is unfortunately no different. For example, the last time I was at Magic Streetwear, Rocawear had built a two-story building for a booth, and this year they were showing their line out of the back of a truck. There were a lot of asian companies with cheap-looking "hip-hop" gear. All of the crazy hustlers of the last few years were gone, replaced with a lot of incredibly garish, bedazzled eyesores that I couldn't imagine anyone in their right mind wearing out of the house, except if they wanted to be featured on peopleofwalmart.com. There were a handful of cool accessories, particularly in the S.L.A.T.E. section, but for the most part – it was pretty lame.

How will I ever get through these crowds?

3 • I'm always amazed how many people who paid for a booth at this event complain of their hangovers on days two and three. It's a constant through all of the Magic events I've been to over the years. How can you expect people to seriously do business if, when I approach your booth for information, you're glassy eyed and complaining about your Vegas partying too much? Hilarious!

Streetwear so loud it makes you deaf.

4 • Ed Hardy completely dominated the Streetwear section of the Convention Center, with huge billboards, bits of motorcycles strewn around, and a catwalk with big fake flames ... flaming. The comment I heard the most around the convention center was "I don't get this Ed Hardy thing." Everyone was wondering how long people would continue to buy this stuff.

5 • There was also a lot of UFC and cage fighting streetwear, for all the shoppers who need something to wear while they are cage fighting. UFC set up a ring for fighters to stand around in, and unenthusiastically pretend to spar in. It was riveting!

6 • I think it was Lana Fuchs from Billionaire Mafia who I saw on a local TV news spot, talking about how much she keeps it real, and I could swear there were a couple of things about her that were definitely not real, including her ridiculous accent.

7 • Project was a sprawling event that smelled like perfume and body spray, but actually had a couple of cool lines.

8 • You can't beat Steve McQueen for cool, and so having an entire clothing label named after him that showcases his style can't help but be cool. It's sort of a mashup of LeMans, Papillion, The Great Escape and The Sand Pebbles, with military designs mashed up with a Johnson Motors motorcycle look.

9 • I'm a huge fan of graphic designer Saul Bass, so the other standout at Project for me was an entire line devoted to vintage Pan Am bags, prominently featuring Saul Bass' classic Pan Am logo.

10 • I met a few very cool, friendly people with some creative companies at Pool and Magic, here are a few standouts:

Urban Aid – Overnight kits for unexpected sleepovers and other ladies "survival" items!

Watto – Cool sculptured metal belt buckles!

Blue Platypus – Very cute tees and designs!

The iTie – I wasn't sure what to expect when I stopped by to check out the "as seen on TV" item The iTie, but they actually had some very cool ties, including some with vintage military/aviation patches, including a very stylish Flying Tiger tie.

Retro-A-Go-Go – Killer vintage accessories photo frames!

Revenj – Designs that are sort of like Seijun Suzuki and Meiko Kaji's illegitimate child, on acid.

I'll be headed back to Magic & Pool in February, and hopefully the economy and creativity rebounds a little more by then. I'll certainly be anxious to see if Pool continues to grow as the most fresh and interesting part of the event!

Wong Fei Hung Shirts

We've got a tee design that pays tribute to the coolest of oldschool kung fu movie heroes, Wong Fei Hung as portrayed by Kwan Tak Hing.

Kwan Tak Hing played Master Wong, who was a real-life Chinese doctor and kung fu hero, in at least 77 films, a record for recurring film roles as a single character. Being a doctor, Master Wong would always treat the villains after he was done whupping them in battle. Most of the old Wong Fei Hung films are lost, but if you want to check out a couple of great movies, seek out MAGNIFICENT BUTCHER and DREADNAUGHT.

One of my favorite Hong Kong movies is Sammo Hung's men on a mission flick, Eastern Condors.

In promoting the movie, the cast showed up in costume to perform a live peking opera style show during a 1987 Hong Kong beauty pageant, and it's a marvel to see how physically talented performers like Yuen Wah (don't miss his incredible entrance at 1:23 in the 1st clip) are without wires or edits:

Josh Freese, journeyman drummer for Nine Inch Nails, Devo, A Perfect Circle, Sting, and the Vandals, has unveiled a unique promotional plan for his new solo album, Since 1972. According to a press release that just went out, the album will be available in a total of eleven configurations, ranging in price from $7 to $75,000. Each level of price point includes a more outlandish offer, up Josh acting as your cabana boy for two weeks and joining you in a private trapeze lesson at the $75,000 level.

I'd go for the $10,000 price point, which includes drinks at Disneyland's exclusive Club 33, a visit to the Enchanted Tiki Room and driving away in Josh's Volvo Station Wagon at the end of the day (once you drop him off at home).

American Idol with Impeccable Taste

Stephen Fowler, who was cool enough to wear a Shelf Life Clothing Dragon Sister Tee on American Idol last week, sings again tonight on American Idol, and only three of the 12 contestants in this round get to move on!

I have a new favorite American Idol – season 8's Stephen Fowler, who made the top 36 and ended the show by dancing around in my "Dragon Sister" tee shirt design!

Gotta love being the punctuation mark of TV's top rated show!

Stephen completely nailed a nice rendition of Stevie Wonder's Superwoman, but then faltered while trying to remember the lyrics to a David Cook song. I actually find that admirable!

Plus, he's from Beachwood, OH.

The Hollywood Reporter reports that Sammo Hung, the vastly underrated Hong Kong star/director/producer/choreographer/talent responsible for dozens and dozens of my favorite movies, is in negotiations to fight some sort of supermonkeys in an upcoming American film directed by Kevin Munroe. Maybe some new exposure will help Sammo's legend grow in the U.S., where he's woefully under-appreciated. Sammo's the equal of Jackie Chan and Yuen Woo Ping (combined!) and should be working on some major projects!

Rejected James Bond Themes

After I recovered (almost) from hearing the new James Bond movie theme "song" for Quantum of Solace by Jack White and Alicia Keys, I decided to seek out Bond themes that have been rejected over the years and compile them here in the Shelf Life blog for convenient one-stop listening. I can see why most of these were rejected by the producers in favor of the themes they used, but in one or two cases, I'm not so sure. We received an email last week informing us that our use of the famous and oft-silkscreened reproduction of Che Guevara on our popular and thought-provoking "I HAVE NO IDEA WHO THIS GUY IS" tee was an infringement of someone else's copyright, which was incredibly surprising, considering the incredibly vast proliferation of the image on everything from t-shirts to Mike Tyson's abdomen – which is what our tee is satirizing in the first place.

Here's what Wikipedia has to say regarding the current legal status of the image:

The legal ownership and copyright of Guerrillero Heroico is complex and un-established internationally. Since Korda's 2001 death, his heirs have even been disputing among themselves copyright ownership of the famous picture. Korda's daughter, Diana Diaz, has pursued one successful lawsuit in 2003 in France against a Paris-based press rights group Reporters Without Borders for using the Che photograph in a poster campaign, decrying Cuba as "the world's largest jail," aimed at dissuading French tourists from vacationing in Cuba after the jailing of 29 dissident journalists. After her successful legal challenge, Korda's daughter declared to the Cuban newspaper Granma that "Reporters Without Borders should call themselves Reporters Without Principles." As for the charge of jailing dissident journalists, Reporters Without Borders has been described as an "ultra-reactionary" organization by the official Cuban state newspaper Granma.

In 2007, legal analyst Sarah Levy addressed the potential legal status of the famous image in Cuba and the United States. It is her ultimate contention that, in Cuba, "despite the claims of ownership from Korda's heirs, the State would now hold any rights associated with the photograph." However, regarding the United States, she postulates that "Under the relatively low requirements articulated by U.S. courts, Korda's Guevara image should obtain copyright protection. She ends her article by declaring that "The outcome of future litigation hinges upon the duration of protection available within a jurisdiction." In regards to the more commonly disseminated sylized version of the photo, lawyers say it will be an uphill struggle to deter non-photographic use of such a widely reproduced image, other than in countries like Italy where laws protect image rights.

Ariana Hernández-Reguant also addressed the legality in 2004, with a less promising view towards Korda's heirs being able to establish ownership over the image, in Copyrighting Che: Art and Authorship under Cuban Late Socialism. She notes how in reference to the case of (Korda v. Lintas & Rex), "There was never any official ruling on whether the depiction constituted a violation of copyright." The author goes on to state that "Korda took the picture while working for a state-run newspaper, his actual property rights would be questionable under both Cuban and international law."

In regards to Che Guevara's heirs, they also believe they have a legal justification in preventing the images "exploitation." Guevara's Cuban widow Aleida March, who will lead the effort from the Che Guevara Studies Center, stated in 2005 that "We have a plan to deal with the misuse. We can't attack everyone with lances like Don Quixote, but we can try to maintain the ethics of Guevara's legacy." In reference to this pronouncement, Guevara's daughter Aleida Guevara told Reuters, "It will be costly and difficult because each country has different laws, but a limit has to be drawn." Despite Guevara's family's verbal commitment, such a challenge has yet to be conducted in court.

Actual legal claim to the image notwithstanding, we've been inspired to avoid involvement in any international skullduggery and copyright claims by tossing out the drawing of the Korda image and updating our shirt to portray "Che" with a puzzled face that supports the punchline that is the real message of our design – that many of the people you see wearing a Che tee have, at best, a vague grasp of the history behind the man displayed on their chest. We think the tee is actually funnier now:

So – whose actual image did I reference in drawing the new design? What face could stand in to allow me to capture the spirit of what "Che Guevara completely stumped as to his own identity" would look like? I started sketching a beret and moustache onto several pictures of confused faces and decided to go with, well ... a confused "Face":

That's right, under that revolutionary beret and moustache – our model was none other than The A-Team's Dirk Benedict.

Since we're big fans of blaxploitation and old horror movies, our love of BLACULA inspired this fictional foray into the world of another of the classic Universal monsters, done in the gritty blaxploitation style – WEREWOLF OF HARLEM. Stare into the tortured eyes of our voodoo-gypsy cursed hero and you'll notice a passing resemblance to the great Fred "The Hammer" Williamson, and genre regular Bernie Casey just might have inspired the look of the priest who must find a way to stop the horror that is running loose uptown.
